I am a PGA Member from the United States. In this entry, I hope to clarify some of the misconceptions of the PGA. I find that throughout the world there can be many different interpretations about the term PGA. First of all, PGA stands for “Professional Golfers Association”. Originally, PGAs were the central bodies for all forms of professional golf in their territories, but now some of them, including those of the United States, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Ireland, are focused on the needs of the majority of professional golfers who work as club or teaching professionals. What does it take to become a PGA Professional? The first step in the US is to take what is called the playing ability test. This is a one day 36 hole test. There is a target score for each course. Once an amateur passes this test, they will have to go through three years of apprenticeship. During the apprenticeship, they will work for a PGA Professional. Each year there will be a round of tests. The tests include anything from managing tournaments, golf rules, managing golf courses, teaching golf, and business skills to name a few. There is one final test, a presentation and an interview. If the candidate passes all three, then they are awarded their PGA certification. What I find that outside of the United States, most people think that a PGA Professional is a professional player or coach. The United States currently has over 25,000 PGA Members. There are over 23 different classifications. During the education process, the PGA Apprentice will learn about each of the following different areas of golf and how to manage them. Once they become a PGA Member, they can then work under the following classifications in order to maintain their status.
